The co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed how parent company Unilever prevented the introduction of a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, that co-founded the company alongside his partner, announced how he will independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual series showcasing causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner

The recent announcement escalates the continuing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

Both founders maintain that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".

The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen revealed via social media how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.

The new dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first created in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts plus Future Plans

Mr. Cohen revealed how he will develop additional ice cream flavors that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.

This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years of involvement, citing concerns regarding how its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to curb its social activism.

Previously, Ben Cohen stated how "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

"My heart compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
