The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
