Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A freshly coined initialism emerged a couple of months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to care for a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that genocidal acts are continuing. Officials has denied these claims, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is accused of. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what unity looks like.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. An institution that was originally built on peace has devolved into a blatant mechanism to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
