Fly-tippers have dumped a massive amount of waste in a open space in Oxfordshire.

The "ecological disaster unfolding in public view" is around 150m (490ft) long and 6m (20ft) high.

The huge mound has materialized in a plot of land adjacent to the River Cherwell close to Kidlington.

A local MP brought up the situation in parliament, stating it was "risking an environmental disaster".

Conservation group reported the unlawful garbage pile was established about a few weeks back by an organised crime group.

"This represents an environmental catastrophe taking place in public view.

"Daily that passes increases the danger of hazardous run-off entering the river system, polluting animals and threatening the condition of the entire catchment.

"Environmental authorities must take action now, not in the distant future, which is their usual reaction time."

Access ban had been established by the environmental authorities.

It is challenging to recognize any particular items of rubbish as it appears to have been pulverized with soil blended.

Some of the waste from the uppermost part of the pile has toppled and is now only five meters from the waterway.

The River Cherwell is a feeder stream of the River Thames, which indicates it flows through Oxford before joining the Thames.

The MP asked the administration for assistance to eliminate the illegal site before it triggered a fire or was washed away into the river system.

Addressing MPs on this week, he said: "Illegal operators have dumped a huge quantity of illegal synthetic materials... totaling many tons, in my district on a riverside area adjacent to the River Cherwell.

"Stream volumes are increasing and heatmaps demonstrate that the waste is also warming, elevating the risk of combustion.

"Environmental authorities stated it has restricted resources for regulation, that the anticipated expense of clearance is larger than the whole twelve-month allocation of the local district council."

Government official said the administration had taken over a failing recycling sector that had caused an "widespread problem of unauthorized fly-tipping".

She informed parliament members the authority had issued a prohibition notice to prevent more entry to the site.

In a declaration, the authority said it was examining the situation and asked for details.

It commented: "We acknowledge the community's concern about situations like this, which is why we intervene against those accountable for environmental offenses."

A newly released study determined efforts to combat major environmental offenses have been "extremely under-prioritised" despite the problem becoming bigger and more complex.

A parliamentary committee proposed an independent "root and branch" investigation into how "prevalent" illegal dumping is tackled.
