Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
