Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
