Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
