The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he won’t let go of until after our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to the title and earning best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his spells at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
