We are checking images and video shared this morning that depict the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to check the location from which the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.

Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
